There are a lot of ways to do everything. I have always believed in doing what works and not wasting time with everything else. At Horsepower, the training philosophy is very simple.

Lift Heavy (Clean, Jerk, Squat, Deadlift)

Sprint

Change Direction

Grip Strength

Jump

These are the components that are going to make you STRONG, POWERFUL, FAST, QUICK, and CONDITIONED. When training for athletic performance what else is necessary?

LOVE

This may sound ridiculous as the majority of my clients are professional Fighters and football players. In reality I do not believe that my athletes would get the results that they get if I did not care about them and their goals, if I did not do everything in my power to help them reach their dreams. As a coach it is my job to help you get where you want to go, prepare you for each competition, assess the success/failure, and move forward with the single goal of learning and getting better. The relationship between an athlete and a coach is a partnership. One that has wins, losses, success, and failure. I take this partnership extremely serious. We learn from everything and everyday is an opportunity to get better and take another step toward your goals. The only time we fail is when we chose not to learn from the events in our life. Win or lose, champions are defined by hard work, dedication, and character… not by who gets their hand raised. Loving what you do and the people that you train is an essential part of being a coach. Wanting them to succeed as much as they do is an essential part of being a coach. This sets up an environment to grow and succeed, but most importantly to learn and always be moving forward no matter what any individual outcome is.

I had the great privilege in college of playing for a man who truly loved every player on his team. I learned what being a coach is about from Steve Johnson, head football coach at Bethel University. You always knew that win, lose, or draw Coach Johnson loved you. Great coaches’ impact lives forever. That is why love is the most important aspect of any successful coaching philosophy.

Philosophy/Results

I believe in two things very strongly as a strength coach. The first and most important is RESULTS. If what you are doing and the philosophy that you are training with is getting results, stick with it. If it isn’t then it is time to find things that get your athletes better. It is our job to help our athletes reach their potential; aid them in achieving their goals. This means that everything that we have them doing needs to be leading them to reaching their highest level in their sport. The second is to have a training philosophy that you believe in. This philosophy should be backed up by the results of your athletes that you train. It does not matter what others say or think about your training style, all that matters is what is happening in your gym, with your athletes… PERIOD.

Be passionate about your coaching philosophy and make sure it gets results.

There has not been a bad week at Horsepower since the day the doors opened. This week has been nothing short of special, the combination of great athletes and their hard work have produced some amazing results! The record board and accomplishments continue to amaze me. Horsepower athletes continue to raise the bar!

Kenn Glenn fights at 145 pounds, he push jerked 360 and deadlifted 505.

Kaitlin Young fights at 135 pounds, she push jerked 280 and cleaned 190. The 280 pound jerk is the 5th heaviest in Horsepower history. (Men and Women)

CT Bailey fights at 170, he cleaned 320 and jerked 345.

Steve Shaw, heavyweight, set a personal best on cleans at 275.

Pat Schilling fights at 145, he set personal bests (and it isn’t even close) on all four major lifts. clean 235, jerk 250, deadlift 365, squat 375. That is a 30% strength and power gain in 4 weeks of training at Horsepower.

Jordan Parsons fights at 145, he cleaned 255 pounds. In addition he set personal bests on squats, deads, and jerks!

Mo Lucas pulled a personal best on deadlift this morning, 495.

Ryan Murray jerked 265 on his first day doing the exercise. I can’t wait to see how strong Ryan gets!!

Zach Bandy flipped the 800 pound tire!

Kim Hansen deadlifted 280 pounds!

Mick Nelson (Football & Wrestling), just finishing up his junior year at Mounds View, continues to but up ridiculous number week after week. Cleaning almost 300, Jerking almost 300, deadlifting 465, and squatting 450.

I am sure that I am forgetting a lot of other big time accomplishments this week at Horsepower. Thank you everyone for all of your hard work!! Results Are Earned!!!!

You can make things as complicated as you want. There are a lot of “trainers” out their who will have you believing that you have to include many useless things into your workout. Many things that they are just trying to sell as the next big thing to put themselves on the map. I don’t buy it, Never Will! The opinion that I have comes from 80 hours a week training athletes, charting everything, and getting feedback involving their sport specific training and competitions. These results are for improved athletic performance, not vanity. You want to get huge results, the answer is easy… Simplify.

Simplify

Spend all your time and effort doing the things that are going to make you stronger and faster. Everything else is wasted time and effort. You don’t have time or money to waste on training that just doesn’t get results. I have simplified what is needed to become the best you can be into 6 pieces of inexpensive equipment.

Not only is it possible… but it is the norm at Horsepower. I have worked with many fighters during camp and the end results are almost always the same. Easier weight cut, increased Power, and improved conditioning.

In an 8-12 week camp, adding the Horsepower Warrior program to your skill training (MMA Training) can make same amazing differences on fight night. This program adds anywhere from 20 to 40 percent strength and power gains. It allows athletes to be able to call on their power 10, 15, 20 minutes into intense exercise and still have their max effort be at the same level as 2 minutes in. The athletes I work with accomplish all this while losing anywhere from 5-20 pounds of body weight.

It is an intense program and you will work everyday! Your hard work (both at Horsepower and your MMA gym), combined with good programming is what is going to give you the opportunity to reach your goals.

I am blessed with the opportunity to train other trainers at Horsepower Strength & Conditioning. It is an honor that they would trust me with their workouts. It is a unique situation where I get to grow and learn from other professionals as I train them which helps me become a better Strength and Conditioning coach!

This is what Jenny Halstead owner of Magna Health & Fitness, and Triathlete had to say about working with me at Horsepower.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Matt Miller at Horsepower, my coach, for allowing Kevin to come in and film our very intense workouts. Matt’s been a huge influence these last few months in building a stronger Jenny, and I’m quite proud to show that off.
